Did you know that the southern edge of the world-renowned Adelaide Parklands is actually owned by the City of Unley?
Unley BUG is calling for a new shared path to be created that would run along the entire southern edge of the parklands along Greenhill Rd.
The benefits of this path would include:
- Safer, more convenient access to the parklands for residents south of the city.
- Strengthened community access to sports facilities in the southern parklands.
- Connecting multiple walking and cycling routes including the Marino Rocks Greenway, the Mike Turtur Bikeway, the Frome/Rugby Porter Bikeway, the City-Crafers Bikeway and a future bikeway on Richmond Rd.
- Better and safer access to bus stops on the northern side of Greenhill Rd.
- A safer way to walk and cycle east-west along the south of the city / the north of Unley, especially at night and especially for children, families and the elderly.
This path wouldn’t need to re-invent the wheel: all we ask for is to copy the success of recent parklands edge paths like the one along South Terrace, or the one along Dequetteville Tce that allows people to continue cycling through the closures of the Fringe Festival.

Below is an image of our proposal for the path, along with a suggestion for how it could be constructed in stages. Stage 1 would serve some of the least-accessible sections of parklands between Goodwood Rd and Peacock Rd, in the process connecting the Parklands Trail and the Mike Turtur Bikeway. Stage 2 would extend this eastwards to link the Mike Turtur Bikeway to the Hutt Rd, in the process connecting to the well-used crossing at Porter St. In Stage 3, access would be given to the popular sports grounds between Hutt Rd and Fullarton Rd, and finally Stage 4 would see the entire new route connected with the Marino Rocks Greenway and the future Richmond Rd shared use path in the west.

Let’s make this happen!
Due to its location across council boundaries and along a main road, this project will need collaboration between the Cities of Adelaide, Unley and the State Government to become a reality.
If you live in or visit the City of Unley or the City of Adelaide, contact your local councillors and MPs to let them know you want to make this path a reality.

- or you can email Unley BUG (that’s us!) to let us know what you think!
We’ve also prepared a one-page flyer that summarises our proposal. Feel free to print it and hand it to friends, family, neighbours and whoever else will listen. In our experience, everyone we talk to about this path is dumbfounded that it doesn’t exist already. With your help, it can!
