Southern Parklands Pathway

Did you know that the southern edge of the world-renowned Adelaide Parklands is actually owned by the City of Unley?

Unley BUG is calling for a new shared path to be created that would run along the entire southern edge of the parklands along Greenhill Rd.

This path wouldn’t need to re-invent the wheel: all we ask for is to copy the success of recent parklands edge paths like the one along South Terrace, or the one along Dequetteville Tce that allows people to continue cycling through the closures of the Fringe Festival.

Proposed route of a southern parklands path showing all the bikeways it would connect into.

Everyone that we have talked to about this path has expressed surprised that it doesn’t exist already. Since sharing our proposal two weeks ago, we’ve had conversations with Unley Councillors, Adelaide City Councillors, mayors, DIT, and even members of parliament. Each and every party has expressed interest in making this path happen – after all, it’s already part of both state and local government strategies!

You can read more about our proposal here, including helpful links to reach out to your local leaders to let them know you want to see it happen.

What do your Unley and Badcoe state election candidates think about walking and cycling?

With the State Election fast approaching next weekend, Unley BUG reached out to every candidate in the electorates of Unley and Badcoe to share our State Election Wishlist. We gave each candidate the opportunity to respond to the wishlist and express their support (or otherwise) for addressing issues that we heard from our members are important to improving walking and cycling in the local area.

Click through here to a dedicated page where we show you who responded, what they said, and what else your candidates have been saying about walking and cycling in the lead up to the election. Vote wisely!

Autumn Equinox Adventure Ride: Saturday 21st March

Next Saturday isn’t just the election – it’s also our quarterly Adventure Ride!

We heard from multiple people that they were sad at missing our tour of Glenthorne / Happy Valley in winter last year. This route is based heavily on that one, with a couple of key differences. We’ll be circumnavigating the reservoir anti-clockwise this time, and our descent from the range will be via Gilbertson Gully to end up at Seacliff and then Brighton.

The route is 32km and involves 330m of climbing. There’s a mix of bike path, gravel fire trail, and singletrack. The latter is mostly mellow, with some low roots and a couple of pinch climbs you may want to walk up – but we’ll point them out.

A reminder that the meeting point for this ride is Flinders University Train Station at 8am. We’ll be finishing up at another train station – likely Brighton.

Below is the route, and you can also download it from Komoot.

We’ll be travelling at a casual pace and won’t be leaving anyone behind. However, these rides have been conceived as something of a ‘step up’ from our regular social rides, so if you’re thinking of attending please keep the following in mind:

  • We’ll be riding into the hills, so there’ll be climbing involved. At some points it’ll be so steep there’s no choice but to push your bike! Exercise makes you live longer, right?
  • Ensure you’re comfortable riding your bike on loose surfaces. We recommend a bike with a tyre of 35mm width minimum for comfort and control.
  • Bring along a spare tube or a way to fix punctures.
  • Ensure you bring adequate water and sunscreen.

Let us know you’re coming via Facebook.
