History
The Unley BUG is the first Bike User Group in South Australia, starting as the Goodwood BUG in 1990 lobbying for bike routes which became the Mike Turtur Bikeway and Marino Rocks Greenway.
By 1991 it had become the Unley BUG. Unley Council actively engaged with the BUG through the 90s including winning state funding to develop the Local Area Bike Plan.
Unley Council and key players in this time including Councillor Les Birch, Council Planner Heather Barclay and Unley BUG founders Ashley Campbell and Nicky Page have a proud record of leading the way in municipal bike planning in SA. Other achievements included traffic treatments in Black Forest (East Ave crossing), Goodwood Rd tram crossing, King William Road bike path, bike route between Unley and King William Rd.
The Unley Bug was reformed when the following motion was passed by council on 27 January 2015:
That: Council call for expressions of interest amongst the community to establish a BUG (Bicycle User Group) with the purpose of promoting cycling within the City of Unley.
The BUG will help identify any issues with safety and utility of the designated cycle routes in Unley.
Activities could include education of the benefits of cycling, organisation of social bike rides and identification of problem locations and opportunities within the City of Unley for cyclists.
